Edwards Sees Chance at All-Star Victory Slip Away in Final Laps

Ford Finishing Results:

5th – Carl Edwards

10th – Brad Keselowski

13th – David Ragan

19th – Greg Biffle

22nd – Joey Logano

JOEY LOGANO – No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford Fusion – “I don’t know.  They were just crashing in front of me.  I thought he was gonna stay up by the wall and he started coming down and I was in the wrong spot and I couldn’t get low enough quick enough as quick as he was coming down.  I wish I would have turned back to the right and maybe I could have gone back to the outside of him, but once he started coming down you’re kind of aimed right at him unfortunately and it killed our Shell/Pennzoil Ford, so we don’t get to have any fun tonight.”  WHAT HAPPENED?  “They were racing hard in front of me and the 18 car spun out there.  I thought he was gonna stay up by the wall and I kind of committed to running that bottom and I was trying to slow up as quick as I could, but once he started coming down the race track I kept trying to turn lower and lower and hoped he would go back up the race track and never did.  I wish I had turned to the right and tried to get around him that way, but I was really thinking he would not keep sliding down like that and keep going back up the corner because it looked like he had a lot of speed still, but I didn’t get to have much fun tonight.  It’s unfortunate, but there are no points so nothing lost tonight and we’ll just go get ‘em in the 600 next week.”

GREG BIFFLE – No. 16 3M Ford Fusion – “It looked like something happened to Jeff Gordon.  He got loose or something driving off in the corner and he took a big wiggle up the hill and the 78 was right on his quarterpanel and I was right on the 78’s quarterpanel so we just ran out of real estate there.  I don’t know what happened to Jeff, but he either got loose or something happened to his car getting in the corner there.  It’s just kind of an accordion effect, I guess.”  YOU HAD A FAST CAR OUT THERE.  “We did have a really fast car.  We had a flat right-rear tire on that last run.  We ran all the way up to third and we put two on and the right-rear was going flat.  We must have cut it leaving pit road or something, but when we pitted it was real low on air.  The car was going again like it was earlier in the night, so I was excited but I only got two more laps on it until the crash.  I think we could have got back up there, I really do.  I don’t know if we could have run with the 5 and the 4, but we had a pretty fast car.”  HOW FRUSTRATING IS IT TO GET CAUGHT UP IN SOMEBODY ELSE’S DEAL LIKE THAT?  “It is frustrating, but we all understand we’re all doing what we can.  Jeff didn’t do that on purpose.  Something happened to Jeff’s car.  He got a big wiggle getting in the corner or something.  I just kind of saw the replay as I drove around the corner and it looked like it got loose and he needed a little bit of race track and it’s really tight out there.  We’re going fast and stuff happens in a hurry.”

BRAD KESELOWSKI – No. 2 Miller Lite Ford Fusion – “We were just off in all areas a little bit and we’ve got to keep working.  It’s a great format – a series of great formats – so I like that.  We learned a lot and we’ve got more work to do for next week.”

CARL EDWARDS – No. 99 Fastenal Ford Fusion – “That’s frustrating.  I just went back and watched the replays.  Jamie just did a perfect job on the start.  I had him cleared for a minute.  If I would have pulled in front of him in turn one, if I would have gone high, I think we would have won that race, but I was just so reluctant to give up the bottom.  Jamie just did a perfect job.  He ended up sweeping around the outside of me, dragging me down, and it was a drag race.  My hat is off to him.  He did a great job.  He earned it.  I drove as hard as I could while he was on the outside and he gave me just the right amount of room to not wreck me, but still beat me.  It was an awesome job by my guys.  If I had it to do over again, I’d do it differently but that’s racing.  You’ve just got to make the best decision you can and move on.  It’s a really tough one, though.”

“Jamie did a perfect job.  I actually got a jump on him.  Our restarts had been great all night and I wouldn’t have even been in that position if it weren’t for my crew.  We went from fifth to first in the pits, so my Fastenal guys did perfectly.  I should have pulled up in front of Jamie going into one, but I just was reluctant to give up the bottom and I pulled back down and he played it perfectly and hung on my right-rear quarter and got by me, and then raced me clean and really hard.  That was really hard racing those few laps and he got it, so he deserves it.  I learned a lesson, but that’s a tough one to swallow.”

“Tonight went really well.  Our guys played it perfectly.  They did a great job on pit road.  Jimmy made great calls.  I think if I would have done a better job on the final restart I don’t know that they could have got by me, but Jamie was perfect and he made better decisions than me going into turn one and he won the race.  My hat is off to him, but it’s so tough to swallow being that close to winning a million dollars from Sprint, and this race is so special.  That’s a tough one to lose.”

ONCE HE GOT BY YOU OTHERS DID AS WELL.  WAS IT DIRTY AIR?  “Our car was not that fast back in traffic, but I think out front we could have held them off.  I was really looking forward to leading after that restart.  I don’t know if they would have got by us, but that’s easy to say.  I wouldn’t have been in that position if it weren’t for my pit crew.  I just hate that I wasn’t able to take what they did – their skill set – and turn it into a win.”

HOW WAS THE RACING?  “I think the long runs were pretty neat.  They weren’t neat for me because I was slow on the long runs, but I think you could pass and run a couple of grooves.  I think it was good.  These cars are going so fast that the track has to open up with two or three grooves for you to be able to pass.  You can’t run a guy down at these speeds in his lines, but I think that this track shows that we can run multiple grooves. I only saw one tire failure.  I don’t know what happened there, but, otherwise, everything seemed good.”
