MELBOURNE, Australia, August 7, 2025 – For the engineers tasked with validating the Ranger Super Duty, the mission wasn't just to see if it could handle mud driving. The real question was far more brutal: Could they invent a test that would simulate the type of extreme conditions a customer might face?
The answer became the mud-pack test, a challenge developed specifically for the Ranger Super Duty with a simple goal: to pack on as much performance-sapping mud as possible.
“Mud is one of a truck’s greatest enemies,” explains Rob Hugo, product excellence and human factors supervisor at Ford Australia. “It can add significant weight, prevent airflow, and act as an insulator, causing components to heat up much quicker. It’s highly corrosive and can clog up fans and alternators, preventing them from running correctly.”
For workers on remote mine sites or off-road enthusiasts tackling extreme trails, this isn't a hypothetical problem – it's an occupational hazard. So, Rob and his team needed a way to replicate and exaggerate this threat.
Their laboratory was a specially designed track at Ford’s You Yangs Proving Ground – a purpose-built mud hell featuring a torturous variety of terrain, from deep ruts and bog holes to long, open sections of thick, sticky clay. But a single pass wasn't enough.
The true test was a multi-day ordeal. Day after day, the team would drive the Ranger Super Duty through the muck, intentionally allowing the mud to build up, layer by suffocating layer. They pushed the truck to its absolute limit until it was carrying more than 600 kilograms of packed-on mud. They forced the truck to operate while hauling the equivalent of a full-grown Brahman steer, its weight smothering the components in a thick blanket of mud.
This suffocating blanket of mud is designed to find the breaking point of every component. It’s a test of durability that goes beyond what most owners will ever experience.
“Our mud-pack testing is a key part of our ‘Built Ford Tough’ validation,” Hugo says with a grin. “So, for the Ranger Super Duty, we knew we had to turn it up to 11. We packed more mud onto this vehicle during development than we ever have before.”
The result is more than just a dirty truck. It’s a validation that the Ranger Super Duty has been designed, developed, and tested to thrive in the most extreme locations. For the people who need to rely on their truck when the going gets toughest, this trial by mud isn't just an engineering exercise – it's a promise their vehicle is built to endure.
